At the very end of the road, past the house with the crooked fence and the tree covered in orange leaves, lived a witch who only opened her door on Halloween night.
As the children ran from house to house, ringing doorbells and shouting trick or treat, she stayed tucked away in her kitchen, stirring a bubbling purple potion.
The room smelled of ripe plums and sugared berries. Violet petals floated across the surface a dash of almond cream, a spoonful of whipped vanilla, and something dark and fruity from a tiny glass bottle.
She stirred three times, tapped her spoon against the edge of the cauldron, and watched the potion slowly turn the deepest shade of purple.
